  2. Well I hope Rita is alright. We seem to have grown up with Deirdre, 44 years in the show! We wondered why she left suddenly some months ago .... RIP indeed. Deirdre was quite a racy lady, what with her her marriage to Samir, her fling with the fake airline pilot (which landed her in prison forced to share a cell with Margi Clarke, and those romances with Mike Baldwin, in between her marriages to the boring Ken Barlow and of course her nightmare daughter Tracy Barlow. No more stuffed marrow for them, or her pottery efforts!

  3. Hello Jon,

Oh dear, your blog is turning into a regular obituary column. First the exhilerating Miss Ekberg and, now, delicious Deidre.Such stalwarts of the cinematic and television screens and, one fears as to who shall be their replacements.

We have not owned a television for some thirty years but speccy Deidre was there when we did. Granada Television led the way....we still live in the golden glow of Brideshead.....ahhh those were the days!

  4. I am so sad. She left us so young.
I grew up partly in England and we used to watch Coronation Street (and Eastenders byt that's another story and I won't get into my majot crush on Nick Berry alias Simon). Deidre Barlow really made it okay to wear glasses on TV. A rarity in those 80/90s golden age of contact lenses. She was a trail blazer along with Nana Mouskouri and Dame Edna who gave a certain power to girls wearing glasses. Just my opinion anyway. I liked Deidre. RIP dear Anne.....

    1. In doing so, Miss Kirkbride ensured that Deirdre Barlow would be an instantly recognisable character forever. Unlike so much of today's "body-image-obsessed" television programming, Corrie (especially back in its heyday) was never afraid to bring real-looking, unglamorous characters onto our screens. We miss that. Jx

    1. There really aren't enough "battleaxes" around these days. You and I excepted, of course. Jx
