And so, farewell the flirtatious and utterly camp "Mrs Fox" - inspiration for many a drag act - aka Patricia Cundell (15th January 1920 - 14th February 2015).
Now there's only two original cast members from Dad's Army left (Pike and the Reverend)...
CAMP: "A cornucopia of frivolity, incongruity, theatricality, and humour." "A deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love." "The lie that tells the truth." "Ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals."
I unfortunately am not familiar with the show or Pamela Cunliffe as Mrs Fox. But how can you not love a lady who can pull off that fox creme stole with that white hat!
ReplyDeleteDad's Army - an "institution" over here, endlessly repeated - was so very, very British that I doubt it could ever succeed "over the pond". Mrs Fox was merely one of its highlights - and yes, we could only hope to wear a hat'n'stole combo with such panache! Jx
DeleteHello Jon,
ReplyDeleteShe was always being slipped an extra sausage!
A fabulous character actress, Pamela Cundell played the wily Mrs Fox perfectly. Dad's Army had a cast of National Treasures.
The fact that someone has the temerity to re-make it for the big screen leaves me shuddering. As much as I do love Alison Steadman, Bill Nighy et al, it will be a pointless exercise - and Catherine bloody Zeta-Jones is in it? Please, no... Jx
