CAMP: "A cornucopia of frivolity, incongruity, theatricality, and humour." "A deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love." "The lie that tells the truth." "Ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals."

Jaeger-meisters no more
And so, farewell to yet another British institution, with the announcement that the 133-year-old Jaeger Clothing has gone into administration - hot on the heels of such venerable rivals as British Home Stores, Austin Reed (although its brand was rescued by Edinburgh Woollen Mills, its stores were not) and Aquascutum (bought out by the Chinese).
The Jaeger company was formerly known as Dr Jaeger’s Sanitary Woollen System, yet over the years developed stylish clothing lines that were the occasional favourites of such disparate fashionistas as Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and the Duchess of Cambridge; it was certainly always renowned for its sturdy woollens, stylish overcoats, tailored suits and... sexy underwear!
...and bathing costumes.
It was the absolute epitome of post-War style...
...and embraced the oh-so-trendy 1960s...
...with lesbians, apparently.
And now, with a whisper not a scream, the most famous purveyors of the classic camel coat are no more.
RIP, Jaeger (1884 - 2017)

I had no idea!!!! I can remember their advertisements in Vogue and was always longing to be a woman to wear those creations. Some of the piece were cool, because even though they were ready to wear, they still had some runway feel to them. They were clothiers that made a statement for the well dressed.
ReplyDeleteWe can but hope that someone will save the company and their style - it would be sad to lose them completely... Jx
Deleteas a knitter, I know of jaeger yarns, but they were not sold in the yarn shops round these parts.
ReplyDeleteQuality, sheer quality... Jx
DeleteWhat a shame - I think of Jaeger as being the sorts of clothes that Barbara Pym heroines see on other, more stylish women, when out and about.
ReplyDelete"Just the right touch of slightly dowdy elegance - if there could be such a thing.”
DeleteShe certainly hit the nail on the head with that one. Jx
Such a shame I loved their clothes. I was given a second hand Jaeger jacket once, it made me feel very smart indeed when I wore it.
ReplyDeleteMother used to fight off the other ladies d'un certain age at jumble sales if she saw an item of their clothing! Jx
