CAMP: "A cornucopia of frivolity, incongruity, theatricality, and humour." "A deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love." "The lie that tells the truth." "Ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals."
carol! tina! charo! eartha! ethel! mitzi! all these ladies could belt out a tune. the only one of these I ever saw in person was eartha in the late 80s in a small supper club in washington dc.
There are numerous omissions from among our own favourites - not least Dame Angela, the Divine Miss M, Bea Arthur, Frances Barber and Sheila Steafel - but all those featured are in the (current) list in the sidebar of this blog. Jx
They played I Kissed a Girl, I Liked It, on our local station this morning and said it was for international women's day, I thought that's a terrible choice, lyrically. Musically you either like a song or you don't, but... Don't know how anyone else feels about that song, it just seems like a straight man's fantasy to me
No not mine (though my little lad likes Roar and that's probably it, she's for someone else, like I think Kylie is for someone else.) It just didn't seem like a very empowering song.
Don't know what I'd play for International Women's Day. Dustys version of I Am Woman probably.

ReplyDeleteOf this list, I/we have seen on stage Eartha, Liza, Stritchy, Fenella, Ana, Liza, Siouxsie, Kylie, Rita, Lulu and Petula!

PS Tina's not on it.
Oi! Why no Judy?
ReplyDeleteBecause it's my list, not yours. Jx
DeleteFair enough, I can never look at one of these lists without complaining.

DeleteI'm surprised you didn't include Diana Ross
DeleteTo use your words, regarding Miss Ross: "she's for someone else".
DeleteNot a "Patron Saint".

She's "for someone else" from my point of view, though I love the Supremes.
DeleteThough my favourite girl group is the Shangri-las because they're bonkers
When the list opens with Ana Matronic , who know this will be knocked out of the park!
ReplyDeleteBrava dear and here's to the ladies 🍸🍸🍸
Milady Ana is top of the alphabetical list, but also a great "opening act" for the rest of the pantheon, methinks. Clink, clink! Jx

ReplyDeleteKaty Perry would never be on this, nor any other list, of mine. Jx
