Always the Bride

[on playing the title part in Bride of Frankenstein (1935)] "The most memorable thing I did in that film, I believe, was my screaming. In almost all my movies since, I've been called upon to scream. I don't know if it's by chance, but I would like to think that I'm not hired for that talent alone".

"Stardom is all hard work, aspirins and purgatives."

[on her "open marriage" to Charles Laughton] "We both needed other company. I met his young men, and I had a young man around and Charles didn't even argue."

Just in time for Hallowe'en, it's the birthday of our Patron Saint Elsa Sullivan Lanchester (28th October 1902 – 26th December 1986)!

A remarkable woman.

  1. There will never be a better suited Bride of Frankenstein then she, in my opinion.

    1. "Mrs Martin Jarvis" Rosalind Ayres played her in that film - but there was only one Elsa. We adore the woman, not least because of her "Bawdy Cockney Songs", of which we have not one, but two albums in our collection here at Dolores Delargo Towers... Jx

  3. I knew her husband was gay but I'm glad to hear she had some fun too. Hope they had a happy marriage in their way. Two screen legends.

    1. They fought like cat and dog. Rumour has it that when she caught Charlie fucking Danny Kaye (or the other way round) on their sofa, she threw them both out AND the sofa! Yet they remained together from 1929 to his death in 1962...

      Something worked. Jx

    2. Danny Kate? The Hans Christian Anderson guy? That's a weird pairing. Hope neither of them had their costumes on.

She probably didn't want to get the sofa dirty.

    3. Danny Kaye was quite the tart in his day - he also shagged (or was shagged by) Laurence Olivier, and allegedly even masqueraded as a customs official one time, in order to call in Sir Larry for an "intimate body search"... Jx

  4. Has anyone ever done a movie of Frankentstein that actually followed the book? I mean the budget would be nightmarish especially if you included the North Pole scenes

  5. I really like the third picture! What fun! It would make a nice poster.

    1. I found it hilarious! The very thought of Elsa Lanchester and Boris Karloff frugging is a concept beyond comprehension. J
