  2. Have always adored opera length gloves. So elegant, not unlike this lovely blog. Kizzes.

    1. “When seated, take off your gloves and put them on your lap. Before you, on your plate, will be a table-napkin, with a dinner roll on it; take the bread out and put it at the side of your plate. Put the table-napkin in your lap, on your gloves, and then listen gracefully, and with attention, to your companion, who will do his best to amuse you whilst the soup is being handed round.

When you have finished your fruit or nuts, dip the tips of your fingers daintily into your finger glass, and dry them in your table-napkin; then pull on your gloves quietly and slowly, keeping your hands while you do so a little below the table.”
      (Lady’s Book of Etiquette, 1860)

So, now you know the rules. Make sure you pay attention next time you are invited to dine with the Dowager Duchess of Grantham.

  3. Wow! What an alignment of fine ladies wearing fancy gloves and born on the same day!

Gardening Question: When should I make my first attempt to propagate a few woody stemmed beauties? Can I start now? Or should I wait until March? Thanks!

PS As for cuttings in January - where does one begin? Depends on your climate, what particular plant species, whether you have a greenhouse or not... I'd suggest you look on the web for gardening bloggers who live in your area, or a similar locale.

  4. We're in the same latitude as the UK, so a lot of what grows there grows here, but I do have a local gardening group I can pose the question too. I just haven't visited it in a while.

    1. Ah, but latitudes don't account for other factors - such as our beneficial effect from the Gulf Stream. London is actually on the same latitude as Calgary in Canada, Inner Mongolia and Newfoundland, but none of those regions are anywhere near "temperate". Jx
