My all-time favourite film Cabaret - which, had it not been for The Godfather, would have swept the board at The Oscars; as it is it won eight (including Best Director for Bob Fosse, Best Actress for Liza Minnelli and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey), and holds the record for most awards won by a film which did not win the Academy Award for Best Picture - received its UK premiere FIFTY YEARS AGO today...
CAMP: "A cornucopia of frivolity, incongruity, theatricality, and humour." "A deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love." "The lie that tells the truth." "Ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals."
One of my faves, too. And, alas, my copy of "I Am A Camera" disappeared long ago. I shall talk to my lovely librarian...
ReplyDeleteI confess, I have never read Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories - but we thoroughly enjoyed the BBC's marvellous biographical drama on his life there, starring former Doctor Who Matt Smith. Highly recommended! Jx
DeleteOne of my Dad's fav films - I love it too, and grew up listening to the soundtrack on vinyl.

Your Dad had excellent taste! Jx
DeleteGood grief, that means I was still in high school when I first saw Cabaret with my "lover" - as we called them back then. Years later we saw Joel and Liza touring in "Liza with a Z" performing songs from the show. Memorable too.
ReplyDeleteHappy memories, Joe! I saw Liza live - gulp - way back in 1983, and needless to say she was faboo! Jx
DeleteSuch a classic. I adore. Brilliantly done. Fosse had a touch of madness to him... great gifs.
ReplyDeleteMr Fosse was a genius! Another matchless talent who departed for Fabulon far too prematurely... Jx
DeleteCome blow your horn.
ReplyDeleteIt's a vocation. Jx
DeleteI adore this film. It was banned in my home town when it came out.
ReplyDeleteOMG was that really 50 years ago!
It was a very different world... Jx
Eine tolle Show......austriche
ReplyDeleteIt was rated "X" for 40 years here in the UK - although I think I first saw it on late-night telly in the late 70s/early 80s,,, Jx
