The colour has faded...

Such sad news today of the death of David Hockney, whose vivid paintings of Californian swimming pools and lush countryside always left the viewer feeling the warmth of the sun, who has departed - fag in hand - to tart-up the drearier areas of Fabulon...

There's little I can add to the acres of coverage today about his talent, his wit, his pioneering gay provocativeness, his legacy, that isn't already out there, but suffice to say the world will be a less interesting place without him.

"I prefer living in colour." - David Hockney

  1. Yep, it's enough to make me want to buy a packet of fags. I will miss him.

    1. It was charming to note from some of the tributes to David Hockney that the Tate switched their smoke alarms off at one event for ten minutes so he could have a smoke, and at The Royal Academy of Art they even built a small smoking terrace outside the upstairs artists' area specifically for him - such was the love and respect that these venerable institutions had for the great man! 2. He was something special and his down to earth demeanour and wit some how made the art world more accessible and enjoyable.

  3. I heard a story on Radio 2 last night about his private chef saying that he would invite the great and good to dinner but would change his mind and cancel at the last minute. The poor chap was given the task of phoning Elizabeth Taylor to tell her not to come around as Mr Hockney was felling too tired to receive guests.
