CAMP: "A cornucopia of frivolity, incongruity, theatricality, and humour." "A deadly, winking, sniggering, snuggling, chromium-plated, scent-impregnated, luminous, quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored, mincing, ice-covered heap of mother love." "The lie that tells the truth." "Ostentatious, exaggerated, affected, theatrical; effeminate or homosexual; pertaining to or characteristic of homosexuals."
My fave "Bette on Joan quote is "Why am I so good at playing bitches? I think it's because I'm not a bitch. Maybe that's why Miss Crawford always plays ladies." Ouch. Jx
The last person who tried to hug her probably got bitten.
As for accents, she was a New England girl by birth, and it's apparently easier for people born in those Eastern states to "do" the English accent. Meryl Streep comes to mind. Katherine Hepburn "almost" got it, as did Cary Grant (who was actually born in Bristol but emigrated). Jx
My most favourite old time movie star!

She was sublime! Jx
DeleteI liked her all her crankiness...but have always been in the Crawford camp more. We share some similarities you see.
ReplyDeleteBut I could watch them spar all day. My favorite from Joan on Bette- ""Poor Bette! She looks like she’s never had a happy day… or night, in her life."
And Bette on Joan-""You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good… Joan Crawford is dead. Good!"
That Bette quote is actually Charles Pierce portraying Bette in one of his fabulous shows.

She was so insanely talented! And funny and cheeky. An entertainer and a great actress. Sometimes you just want to hug her but you also wouldn't dare.
ReplyDeleteShe could do an English accent too which for a Hollywood star is pretty rare.

Never another like her. Smoked like a chimney, drank like sailor...
