Fashion is not frivolous

"Fashion is not frivolous. It is a part of being alive today."

"The fashionable woman wears clothes. The clothes don't wear her."

"Snobbery has gone out of fashion, and in our shops you will find duchesses jostling with typists to buy the same dress."

“I love vulgarity, good taste is death, vulgarity is life.”

"A woman is as young as her knees."

RIP, the Swinging Dame Mary Quant OBE, FCSD, RDI (11th February 1934 - 13th April 2023)

  1. Yes, I had some Quant in my wardrobe, back in the day.

  2. I think I had some Quant tights in the eighties. I had the Daisy doll, which I wish I'd looked after; and my first favourite perfume was Havoc by Mary Quant - and I used to wear Quant lipstick. She seems to have touched all of our lives in some way.
My knees have always looked better in trousers.

*d'Anjou

    1. She was exactly in the right place at the right time to capture the zeitgeist of the Swinging Sixties. Jx

  4. More sad news. I am starting to be afraid to open your blog.
She was Ab Fab as are your set of photos.
    RIP. Dame Mary Quant.

    1. When the great and the good depart for Fabulon, I feel it only right to mark such sad occasions. Our icons, national treasures and household names (and we, more's the pity) are all getting older [and Dame Mary was 93; not exactly a shock that she died], so it's not really surprising that the "Book of the Dead" is filling-up, year on year... 5. I had her lip gloss! Over here anything Mary Quant was through the roof expensive but dammit, I had her lip gloss and it was swanky.

    1. Being a man, albeit a gay man (and back in the 1980s, very much into the "|New Romantic" era), I have never understood what lip gloss actually is... Lipstick, I get. Lip gloss, no. Jx

  6. Thank you.

I'm guessing Mary Portas was a big fan of Mary Quant from her haircut, dress sense etc. They look so similar
