Miss Barbra Streisand, photographed by Cecil Beaton in the costumes he designed for her for On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970).
Yes, today is the 80th birthday of the one-and-only "Megababs" - the "Greatest Star" [as predicted by the similarly-titled song from Funny Girl], EGOT [she was awarded an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony], record-holding chart-topper [with eleven albums that hit #1 on the Billboard chart in the USA, selling a certified 68.5 million copies] and unassailable Hollywood powerhouse.
All hail!
Many happy returns, Barbara Joan "Barbra" Streisand (born 24th April 1942)!
She's also a very fine director. On A Clear Day is a very flawed film, terribly edited. And some of the sound work was also suspect. Interesting concept executed badly. As for Babs. She, like other divas, such as Patti LaBelle, have a method of approaching a song. Unless taken firmly by the hand and guided, as in the case of her work with Barry Gibb, she enters softly and builds to a roar. Granted, her voice is such that she could sing the phone book and be incredibly captivating. She is one of a kind and, in her peculiar manner, broke many a barrier, many glass ceilings. Bravo, to her. All hail the ultimate queen. Kizzes.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, La Streisand's "roar" knocks spots off anything more recent wibblers could ever manage - Whitney, Mariah, Slimy Dion, Xtina are all crappy amateurs by comparison.
DeleteI agree with you about On A Clear Day - a mess of a film. Like Star! with Julie Andrews. Could have been so much better... Jx
I love these pictures of her! Happy Birthday, Barbra Streisand!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I don't like is the hat with the purple dress. It looks too much like a lampshade. I would have stitched the fabric into a large rose pinned into an updo instead.
Blame Cecil Beaton! Jx
DeleteDame Maureen Lipman presented a lovely tribute to her on radio 4 on Saturday- you've probably already listened to it
ReplyDeleteWe haven't, actually. Apart from the Today programme (which I have on while getting ready for work), we rarely listen to R4. I haven't yet listened to the musical tribute to her on Radio 2 hosted by Richard E Grant, either... Jx
