I remember when there were lots of businesses that looked like photo #1, leading down to a basement level with subway tiles. I must be nearing my expiration date.
Smoking in pubs was practically compulsory! I remember the first few weeks after the ban, how desolate it was inside bars as the only punters indoors were the non-smokers minding the coats. And suddenly, there was that smell - a combination of filthy pub carpets and the urinals - everywhere! Jx
It's always been hard to view clandestine places through that little hole in the wall.
