The year’s pleasant king

Spring, the sweet spring
By Thomas Nashe

Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king,
Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,
Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing:
      Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The palm and may make country houses gay,
Lambs frisk and play, the shepherds pipe all day,
And we hear aye birds tune this merry lay:
      Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet,
Young lovers meet, old wives a-sunning sit,
In every street these tunes our ears do greet:
      Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to witta-woo!
            Spring, the sweet spring!

It's the Vernal Equinox, dear reader, known in some quarters as "The first day of Spring".

From now on, the days get longer - Summer's just around the corner...

    1. It has been very mild here, all the birds are singing, and there's a lot of (unexpected) growth on things we feared had died, so I am optimistic - and no I didn't alter the clocks. I know we're being deprived of an hour in bed next weekend, but it's worth it for even lighter evenings... Jx

  3. La printemps est la. Cheris, que les fleurs vous enivrent de leur parfum, que les oiseaux chantent pour vous et que les journees soient merveilleux. Bon Voyage pour moi, je pars de Montreal vers la Martinique et les Caraibes pour une semaine.

  4. And here's lil ol' me, chiming in with a whoopee! and a hooray! and maybe a high kick (nope! I'm beyond high kicks and splits) because things will cool down. I can plant things! Walk down to the beach! In these tropical climes there are certain times of day...when I chuck cushions if the radio dares to play Noel Coward. (But I do still miss the English Spring)

    1. You tropical Antipodeans! You'll never have the "joys" of "four seasons in one day", which is what we get here... Jx
