Then to Sylvia let us sing

Who is Sylvia? what is she,
    That all our swains commend her?
Holy, fair, and wise is she;
    The heaven such grace did lend her,
That she might admirèd be.

Is she kind as she is fair?
    For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair,
    To help him of his blindness;
And, being helped, inhabits there.

Then to Sylvia let us sing,
    That Sylvia is excelling;
She excels each mortal thing
    Upon the dull earth dwelling;
To her let us garlands bring.

RIP, the captivatingly beautiful Sylvia Syms OBE (6th January 1934 – 27th January 2023).

Another glittering star in the firmament has blinked its last.

  2. It is bugging me what I have seen her in that I really enjoy, besides seeing her in an episode of New Tricks, and Agatha Christie's Marple.

    1. Well, she was really impressive in the two classic drama films pictured above - Ice Cold in Alex and the groundbreaking Victim - and many more, appeared in myriad TV series from The Saint in the 1960s through to Gentleman Jack, and played The Queen Mum opposite Helen Mirren in The Queen... Chances are, over a seven-decade career you would have seen her in quite a few things. Jx

  3. So many great films over her career. One of her later roles was the headmistress, berating the schoolgirl Shirley Valentine.
