CAMP: "A cornucopia of frivolity, incongruity, theatricality, and humour." Adore. She aged her way... smoking and drinking. She became so hard. Well... so be it. Her films. Watched Jezebel the other day. Wanted to smack the crap out of Henry Fonda and I wish Bette had. She's impeccable. Such a professional and she knew exactly what she was doing every moment. She never dialed it in... except near the very end. I love so many of her films... but Charlotte is a fave. One can only imagine how much better it would have been if Joan was on hand, but Olivia does her steely best, so I adore it. Thanks for this. Your blog is so much fun.
Miss Davis certainly led the way on that front. She was the first to go head-to-head in court against a studio mogul (Jack Warner) and, although she lost the case to break her contract with him, just about every picture she did for Warners after that was an award-winner! Jx
An incredible actress. And another one with four husbands.
ReplyDeleteShe ate the first three. Jx

DeleteI surmise Ill be the next Ms. Davis then.
I should live to 100 with that philosophy!
DeleteBette was indeed an unstoppable force who cut a swathe through mediocrity. Jx
PS I always thought Henry Fonda deserved a slap.

DeleteAmen, Jon, you nailed it with that statement. Yet, some of us express our opinions anyway and wear the label proudly.

DeleteI feel like I was brought up on Bette Davis films - all that drama and a tiny waist. Terrific stuff.
ReplyDeleteSx
"All that drama and a tiny waist" - is that you, or Miss Davis? Jx
DeleteLet us just say that Bette was something of an influence on an impressionable mind [and waist]!
